Fernet Branca

Fernet Branca is a type of amaro, which is a category of bitter herbal liqueurs. The spirit is produced in Italy and is one of the most well-known and widely used amaros globally. It is often consumed as a digestif or after meal beverage to aid in the digestion of the food. Within the bartending community, ordering a shot of Fernet Branca is know as the “Bartenders Handshake.”
Key characteristics of Fernet Branca include:
Bitterness: This comes from the various botanicals and herbs used in its production. The bitterness is balanced with other flavors to create a unique and intense taste.
Herbal Infusion: The recipe involves the maceration and infusion of a variety of herbs, roots, spices, and other botanicals. A formula in which is a closely guarded secret, known only to a few individuals within the company.
Minty and Cooling Notes: Fernet Branca is known for its cooling and minty notes, which contribute to its refreshing and invigorating quality.
Dark Color: The liqueur has an almost black color, which is a result of the infusion of botanicals and aging in wooden barrels.
High Alcohol Content: Typically has a high alcohol by volume (ABV), often around 39% to 45%.
While the amaro can be enjoyed on its own over ice, it is also a popular ingredient in cocktails. One of the most famous being the “Fernet and Coke,” a simple mix of Fernet Branca and cola, especially popular in Argentina.
