Bitters
(BIT-urz)
Bitters are concentrated, aromatic liquids made by infusing herbs, roots, barks, fruits, and other botanical ingredients in a base of alcohol or a mixture of alcohol and water. They are known for their strong and complex flavors, which can be both bitter and aromatic. Bitters are used as a flavoring agent in cocktails, adding depth, complexity, and balance to the overall taste.
There are various types and brands of bitters, with some of the most well-known being aromatic bitters like Angostura bitters. Aromatic bitters often contain a blend of botanicals, including spices like cinnamon, cloves, and allspice, as well as herbs and roots. Apart from aromatic bitters, there are also fruit-flavored bitters, herbal bitters, and more, each contributing its unique flavor profile to cocktails.
Bitters are typically added to cocktails in small quantities, usually just a few dashes, to enhance the overall taste by providing a layer of complexity. Some classic cocktails that traditionally include bitters are the Old Fashioned, Manhattan, and the Martini. Bitters are a crucial ingredient in mixology and are used to balance the sweetness of other components in a drink.
