Aperitif
(ap-uh-REE-teef)
An apéritif (or aperitif) is a typically alcoholic beverage served before a meal to stimulate the appetite. It is meant to be enjoyed in a relaxed setting and is often dry or slightly bitter. Common examples include dry vermouth, dry sherry, champagne, Aperol and Campari. Apéritifs are popular in many cultures and are believed to prepare the palate for the flavors of the upcoming meal. They are served in smaller quantities than regular drinks and are valued for their ability to whet the appetite and set the tone for a dining experience.
