Ozama Rum: A Design-Led Journey Through Aged Expression
By Isabella Cruz
Ozama Rum is a design-forward spirits brand built around a modern interpretation of traditional rum styles, combining expressive liquid profiles with a strong visual identity across its range.
From unaged clarity to extended barrel aging, the portfolio is structured to showcase how rum can evolve while maintaining a consistent house style centered on approachability, richness, and clarity of flavor. That visual identity was further recognized in the 2026 Chilled Awards, where all three expressions earned awards for Creative Bottle Design.
Across the Blanco, Gran Añejo, and Añejo expressions, the range moves through a clear progression of style and maturity, offering a snapshot of how aging transforms both structure and depth.
All of the selections featured here were entered into the May judging of the 2026 Chilled Awards, where they were evaluated by working bartenders based on flavor, mixability, and overall performance in the glass.
Ozama Añejo Rum
Overall Score: 93 Points (Double Gold)
Warm light amber in the glass, Ozama Añejo signals a premium, aged expression with depth and intention. The nose is the most expressive in the lineup, opening with rich tropical notes of coconut and banana layered over elegant oak, vanilla, and caramel.
On the palate, it delivers a refined, structured entry where oaky richness unfolds into developing caramel sweetness. The texture is medium-bodied and well-rounded, allowing complexity to build without feeling heavy or overworked. Judges highlighted its exceptional balance and integration, noting how oak spice and natural sweetness remain in harmony from start to finish.
The finish is long and indulgent, with lingering caramel and soft spice. Highly versatile, it performs equally well as a contemplative sipper over ice or as a foundation for elevated cocktail builds.
Ozama Gran Añejo Rum
Overall Score: 90 Points (Double Gold)
Deep amber in the glass, Ozama Gran Añejo signals maturity and time well spent in barrel. The nose is rich and expressive, led by spiced oak, caramel, and vanilla, with a warmth that feels both decadent and controlled.
On the palate, it opens rich and structured, with pronounced wood spice carrying through from the first sip. The texture is smooth and velvety, with a fuller body that maintains balance without becoming overly dense. Judges highlighted its depth of character and seamless oak integration, allowing complexity to build while preserving the rum’s core identity.
The finish is long and warming, with lingering spice and soft sweetness that slowly fades. Best suited for slow sipping, either neat or over a large rock, where its full structure can unfold.
Ozama Blanco Rum
Overall Score: 87 Points (Gold)
Crystal clear and pristine in the glass, Ozama Blanco opens with inviting aromatics of fresh sugarcane, light spice, and subtle hints of pineapple. The nose sets a bright, approachable tone that leans clean and gently tropical.
On the palate, it leads with an upfront sweetness that evolves into a warm, lively character. The texture is silky and smooth, giving the spirit an easy, approachable feel throughout. Judges highlighted its honest expression of the Blanco category, noting its clean structure and balanced, aromatic lift.
The finish is warm and efficient, leaving the palate clean with a soft lingering spice. Best suited for bright, mixable cocktails like a classic Daiquiri, where its clarity can shine without overpowering the build.
