Campo Viejo Launches 2012 Garnacha
By Chilled Magazine
Garnacha is one of the most widely planted red grapes in the world, with strong red fruit expression, subtle notes of sweet spices and floral aromas. Since the wine is often used in blends, it does not often take the spotlight. Campo Viejo, however, is celebrating the varietal by launching its first-ever 100% Garnacha.
The holiday emerged following the inaugural Grenache Symposium in 2010, which hosted 250 delegates from 23 countries to draw up a blueprint for boosting the global profile of the wine. The event gave spotlight to one of Spain’s most popular varietals, which is one of the last wines to be harvested and thrives in warm, dry conditions, like the beautiful Rioja Valley in Spain. The wine is food-friendly, complementing an array of dishes, including vegetables, beef, lasagna and pasta.
”Unusual for such a wine, the Garnacha also has a marked caramel undertone that is more nuanced than the average Rioja. Our vineyard gives us the opportunity to create wines with all the diversity of the region, and we’ve been able to explore the marriage of more complex notes to a traditional fresh finish.” -Elena Adell,Chief Winemaker
