Jigger
(JIG-ur)
A cocktail jigger is a bartending tool used for measuring and pouring precise amounts of liquid ingredients when making cocktails. It typically consists of a small, hourglass-shaped metal or glass vessel with two separate compartments of different capacities on each end. The two sides are often referred to as “jiggers” or “measurements.”
Common sizes for the two compartments of a cocktail jigger include one ounce (30 milliliters) on one end and either 1.5 ounces (45 milliliters) or 0.75 ounces (22 milliliters) on the other end. Some jiggers may have additional measurements.
Using a jigger ensures accuracy and consistency in the quantities of ingredients, which is crucial for achieving the desired flavor balance in cocktails. Bartenders can quickly and easily measure spirits, liqueurs, syrups, and other liquid components with precision.
The two main types of jiggers used are:
Japanese-Style Jigger: These have a sleek design, often with a tall, narrow shape. It may have multiple measurement lines inside each compartment for added flexibility
Double-Ended Jigger: This type has two different measurements on each end, offering a convenient tool for measuring two ingredients without the need to switch jiggers.
