By Chilled Magazine

Champagne Pommery’s launch of Louis Pommery is rooted in tradition and symbolizes the best of sophisticated French winemaking combined with California style and innovation.

Louis Pommery is redefining California cool and is set to become a game changer in the California sparkling wine category this spring. With a rich legacy in the Champagne industry, a deep understanding of the California climate and a masterful production process, Louis Pommery, the first new California sparkling wine created by Champagne Pommery, is crafted for the everyday connoisseur seeking a modern, fresh sipping favorite.

From the first-of-its-kind process to remove yeast sediment with better precision to the delicate maximization of West Coast microclimates, the production of this bubbly beverage is truly an art. No detail is overlooked; it is a craftsmanship you can taste. Made of 96% Chardonnay and 4% Pinot Noir, Louis Pommery is an ode to the maison’s iconic style, evoking vivacity, freshness and finesse. And this premium sparkling wine will be surprisingly affordable when compared to true French champagne, as an everyday luxury at just $24 per bottle in major cities this May.

The rich history behind this sparkling California wine rests in the Pommery name, and its heritage dating back to the mid-1800s. Following founder Alexandre Louis Pommery’s death in 1858, his widow Madame Louise Pommery – a woman well ahead of her time – not only transformed the family’s modest business into one of the largest Champagne houses in France, but she is also credited for inventing Brut Champagne in 1874. This same spirit of innovation continues to drive Pommery’s latest venture in California today.

With over 40 years as a designated oenologist, Thierry Gasco is the cellar master charged with perpetuating the Pommery style. Aside from being an esteemed and awarded winemaker, Gasco is also a forward-thinking visionary who borrows from fashion and trends to inspire seasonal production. His pioneering spirit led Gasco on a quest to produce the purest, clearest wines through a revolutionary method of yeast encapsulation. This novel process yields wines that are uniquely sediment-free with an exceptional gustative and aromatic range. Gasco is leading Champagne Pommery on a pursuit to develop a new range of Louis Pommery sparkling wines from regions around the globe, with the California sparkling wine being the first.

The grapes were carefully selected across California’s finest vineyards in order to capture the essence of the land, beyond Napa Valley. With an emphasis on the geographic diversity of the region, the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes are then nourished to perfection by the warm sun, cool breezes, and mineral-rich soil.

The resulting sparkling wine fills the palate with sublime notes of green apples with harmonizing acidity and minerality, before leading to a delicate essence of lemon mousse with a buttery vitality, and finishing with an aroma of peaches and apricots. The jovial wine pairs perfectly with meals, but is equally enjoyable without accompaniment. Louis Pommery gives a modernity and freshness to a wine steeped in tradition through its lively palate and molten sparkle.
