Los Angeles Gastropub Badmaash Pairs Indian Cuisine with Beer

By Chilled Magazine

As you know, there are many foods and beverages that go perfectly together like wine and cheese, scotch and chocolate and Indian food and beer.

Indian cuisine is known for being heavily spiced, sometimes spicy, but always extremely flavorful, and Downtown Los Angeles’ only Indian gastropub, Badmaash, has crafted a beer list that perfectly pairs with their menu.

Badmaash owner, Nakul Mahendro has hand-selected beers from a variety of breweries with a unique variety of ales, IPAs and stouts, that pair as perfectly with the gastropub dishes as they do with the traditional Indian fare.

Classic Butter Chicken & Kingfisher Premium Indian Lager

“Classic Indian curry with a classic Indian beer – there’s nothing like it… think a hot day in Punjab, you pull over to have bite at your favorite dhaba… as the scorching punjabi sun beats down on you as you’re dipping your fresh hot naan into that butter chicken… you reach for your ice cold refreshing kingfisher beer. Cooling. Thirst-quenching. Premium Indian lager. The floral & spicy hops are crisp enough to cut through the rich tomato curry, and balance well with the earthiness of the fenugreek.”

“Most people would go straight for an IPA when it comes to Indian food… but what they fail to realize is that the IPA wasn’t invented FOR Indian food… it was invented by the British so that the beer could travel the long journey from England to India without spoiling… so in essence, the IPA is more of a ‘compromise beer’ where the Classic British Pale Ale is THE beer of choice. Thank god in today’s world we have some of the best pale ales made right here in LA… Drake’s 1500 is, in Nakul Mahendro’s opinion, THE beer of choice for Badmaash’s food. Drakes 1500 is a Dry Hopped American Pale Ale, which means it has a clean crisp malt flavor, and lots of bright-citrusy hop aroma and flavor – without overwhelming bitterness. This is definitely the crown jewel for Drakes, and you can see Nakul drinking a shit-ton of it at Badmaash.”

Tandoori Salmon Boti Kabab & Avery Brewing’s White Rascal

“This unfiltered Belgian white ale is nutty, creamy and amazing. It is spiced with coriander and orange peel, which gives it a spicy and refreshing flavor. This goes extremely well with the salmon as it isn’t too big and heavy and won’t overpower the fish, but has enough “oomph” to stand up to the dill and spices in the marinade, as well as the smoked tomato chutney. The best part about this beer is how the citrus and sugars work so well with the char of the salmon skin. This is a beer Nakul & Arjun have had on the menu since Badmaash opened in 2013, and we’ll be drinking it forever.”

“Spinachy-tomatoey-paneer-cheesey goodness goes absolutely perfect with Golden Road’s Brown Ale. This rich & smooth brown ale is packed full of caramel and chocolate notes. The toastyness goes perfectly well with the earthy-vegetal flavors of spinach and onion-tomato. GUOTB is a light, thirst-quenching brown ale that drinks very easy – it won’t overpower the flavors or body of the Saag Paneer, but its sugars and malt are substantial enough to cut through the spices.”
