Copper & Kings Launches Floodwall American Apple Brandy

By Chilled Magazine

Latest release is aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels and sherry casks.

Louisville-based Copper & Kings American Brandy Co. is launching its second aged apple brandy expression, the Floodwall, this fall.

The apple brandy continues Copper & Kings’ tradition of celebrating its Louisville hometown, and the Butchertown neighborhood. The iconic Louisville floodwall, finished in 1957, protects the city from the natural disaster of the flooding of the mighty Ohio River. Stretching from Butchertown to south of Rubbertown, the floodwall is Louisville’s “brutalist work of art.” It stands high and proud and as founder Joe Heron says, “it feels like the castle walls.”

A superb blend of superior, exclusively copper pot-distilled, apple brandy aged in bourbon barrels and 250-liter Oloroso sherry casks sourced in Spain, Floodwall American apple brandy has a minimum age of four-year-old brandy and is a full bodied 100-proof alcohol strength. Floodwall is non-chill filtered with no post-distillation addition of apple flavor or essences, no boisé (oak flavor or infusion), sugar or caramel color for an authentic, uncorrupted natural flavor and natural color.

“I love this apple brandy. It’s such a reflection of Copper & Kings character and personality overall – it sets its own path, and it’s quite unafraid to be its own person. It has approachable swagger and confidence. American Apple Brandy from Butchertown, Louisville, Kentucky. Aye, American Apple Brandy.”
– Founder Joe Heron

“We changed this up just a touch – moving to smaller sherry butts to smooth it out a little better, and to get the butterscotch tonality a little more pronounced. We also had some fantastic bourbon casks from very celebrated distilleries. And no cheats – no added apple flavors or essences, no added Boisé. Full integrity intact. It’s quite intense, quite forceful. At 100-proof it is very supple, rounded with strong whiskey qualities.”
– Head distiller Brandon O’Daniel

Dave Driscoll, Spirits Buyer for California’s K&L Wine Merchants described it as “more like GlenDronach than Calvados.” And that’s just perfect in our opinion.

Copper & Kings’ fall apple brandy program also includes upgraded packaging for its Un-Aged Apple Brandy expression. This includes a new label and the first sighting of Copper & Kings’ new custom embossed bottle. The labeling reflects the richness and intensity of the double-distilled spirit, which is non-chill filtered and distills apple wine from fresh-pressed Michigan apples.

  • Cost: $40 per 750mL bottle

  • Aroma: Earthy, root-cellar, honeyed apple bouquet (unusually fresh) with lovely complexity. Quite floral, honeysuckle and butterscotch mingling with hints of whiskey, oak, and vanilla.
  • Taste: Quite crisp, frisky and slightly mid-palate. “Scotchy” and a little nutty rancio with sherry butterscotch and red-apple skin. Spicy and a little feisty.
