CHILLED: Tell us a bit about the projects you are working on or have coming up.

Candace Smith: It’s pretty cool that I currently have projects in both television and film at the moment. I’m starring in a new WE tv series, “Million Dollar Matchmaker” premiering July 8th 10pm ET. Love guru Patti Stanger and I are back at it again, but at a resort in Southern California. We brought back some of our toughest cases and it was a roller coaster ride. Entertainment guaranteed!

I’m most excited about the theatrical release of my film My Father Die, written and directed by Sean Brosnan and produced by Pierce Brosnan, Orian Williams and Sanja Banic. I play Nana, the heroine of this gritty action thriller set in the South. It’s a very cool, dark film that allowed me to challenge myself with the stunts and material. Nana is a beast and I’m grateful I finally got the opportunity to share what I can really do. We premiered the film at SXSW and it will hit theaters at the end of the year.

CHILLED: With your busy schedule, what do you like to do with your down time?

CS: My schedule has been pretty insane lately with filming on location, traveling and my love life. My man was born and raised in Hawaii, so we recently got a place there. When I have down time, there is nothing I love more than our chill time in Hawaii together. The live music, outdoor activities, cool people and chill vibes do something for my soul. I love cooking, having friends over and enjoying real moments.

CHILLED: When you go out to eat, where do you like to dine?

CS: I live for food and have my favorites in every major city. Every time I land in Los Angeles, I head straight from the airport to Sugarfish! My next stop is one of the dopest restaurants in the world, Bestia in downtown Los Angeles. I’m actually friends with the chef/ owner, Ori Menashe, so I get special treatment (meaning more truffles). In Honolulu, I love Uncle Bo’s and you can’t go wrong with Alan Wongs or the original Roy’s in Hawaii Kai.

CHILLED: What types of dishes do you usually order?

CS: I love to do small plates and/or share with my peeps so I can get a little bit of everything! I like to take my time when I go out to eat and start off with a great glass of wine or cocktail and salad. Then it goes down with at least a few appetizers, usually oysters or some type of seafood dish. I like to end on a strong note with meat and a robust, spicy glass of red wine.

CHILLED: Do you cook?

CS: I am hands down one of the best cooks who does not do it for a living. I’m sure I sound arrogant but asking any of my friends or family. I have a beautiful relationship with food and find cooking to be very therapeutic for me. Cooking for others makes me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. I’m pretty much bomb with every cuisine including Italian, Thai and Chinese. My panang curry is no joke and of course I can murder soul food.

CHILLED: What types of drinks do you order when out?

CS: I’m not a girly girl and I do not drink girly drinks at all. I love a great bourbon, whiskey or scotch. I prefer a peaty scotch and Laphroaig is my favorite. I’m also a big fan of Oban scotch. If I do a cocktail, they have to know what they are doing and it will most likely be an Old Fashioned.

CHILLED: Do you prepare drinks at home?

CS: I love to make drinks at home! I created my own whiskey drinks, which starts with me cutting up fresh ginger and allowing it to boil with sugar for an hour. That’s all you get with that cocktail. The key is fresh ingredients, especially herbs to the perfect at home cocktail.

CHILLED: Do you own a home bar?

CS: We have an impressive collection stocked in the kitchen but I have not created a bar at home yet. That could be trouble. We do keep the kitchen stocked with Jameson, an old school favorite, Laphroaig, Oban and always some great local Hawaiian beers. I’m a big fan of Kona Brewing in Hawaii.

CHILLED: What would your ideal home bar be like?

CS: If I did own a home bar, it would be simplistic but rustic and slightly industrial. This would compliment our modern décor we love. I would most definitely have some wood floating shelves behind the bar along with a few of my old alcohol print ads so no one forgets how sexy I was.

CHILLED: What is your favorite drink/cocktail?

CS: My favorite cocktail is an Old Fashioned but on the occasion I will have vodka, then it’s a Moscow Mule but it must be in a copper mug.

CHILLED: Have you ever been a bartender?

CS: I lasted a few months while in college. It didn’t go too well. For some reason I’m not built for the service industry.
