Celebrate Labor Day Weekend with Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum Cocktails and BBQ Recipes

The art of barbecuing is just as old school and Americana as Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum.

To help you celebrate Labor Day Weekend, we’ve come up with some rum-enhanced culinary ideas and of course some spiced cocktails perfect for sipping and enjoying outside.

FOR THE HUNGRY

Pulled Pork Butt

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Orange Juice
  • 1/4 cup Lime Juice
  • 1/4 cup Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 1 Medium White Onion, Coarsely Chopped
  • 6 Cloves Garlic, Coarsely Chopped
  • 2 tsp. Ground Cumin
  • 2 tsp. Dried Crushed Oregano
  • 2 tsp. Ancho Chili Powder
  • 2 tsp. Sea Salt
  • 1 Bay Leaf, Whole
  • 1/2 tsp. Ground Black Pepper
  • 2 lb. Pork Butt Roast

Preparation: Combine first 11 ingredients in a bowl and stir. Place pork roast in a slow cooker and pour marinade over it. Cook over low heat 4-5 hours, turning every 45 minutes to an hour, until it falls apart. Serve on a bun with coleslaw on the side, or with rice.


Spiced Rum Peppered Steak

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 2 tbsp. Dark Brown Sugar
  • 1 tbsp. Freshly Ground Pepper
  • 1 tbsp. Soy Sauce
  • 6 Cloves Garlic, Crushed
  • 2 lb. Flank Steak, Sliced into 1 1/2 ” Pieces
  • 1 tbsp. Butter

Preparation: Mix together the first 5 ingredients in a Ziploc bag. Add the flank steak and seal the bag. Refrigerate for 2 hours. Remove steak from bag. Place on a hot grill. Cook to desired temperature, turning twice. Allow steak to rest for about 5 minutes before slicing. Serve sandwich style with red onions and mayo on crusty rolls.


Chicken Kebabs

Ingredients:

  • 4 Garlic Cloves
  • 1 Medium Sweet Onion, Cut into Chunks
  • 1/2 cup Green Onion, Diced
  • 1 tbsp. Sweet Steak Sauce
  • 3/4 tbsp. Chopped Thyme
  • 1 tsp. Ground Allspice
  • 1/2 tsp. Ground Cumin
  • 1″ Fresh Ginger, Peeled
  • 1/2 tsp. Brown Sugar
  • 1 cup Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 1/2 cup Dark Molasses
  • 3 Limes, Zested and Juiced
  • 4 Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts, Cut into 1″ Cubes

Preparation: Place first 9 ingredients into food processor and blend until smooth. Pour contents into a non-metallic bowl and stir in rum, molasses, and lime juice until evenly mixed. Put chicken unto the bowl making sure to coat entirely. Cover and marinate for 24 hours in refrigerator. Fire up the grill. Remove chicken from marinade and put on skewers. Place marinade in pot and bring to a boil. Let simmer for 5 minutes. Use as a basting sauce, brushing the chicken every time you turn the skewers (approx. 4 times). Grill until slightly charred.


Sailor Jerry BBQ Sauce

Sailor Jerry BBQ Sauce

BBQ Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp. Vegetable Oil
  • 1 Medium Onion, Diced
  • 3 Garlic Cloves, Crushed
  • 1 cup Dark Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 1/2 cup Hot Sauce
  • 1/2 cup Ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp. Ground Cloves
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tsp. Ground Mustard
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce

Preparation: Heat oil in saucepan and diced onion and garlic. Sauté until onion is translucent (approx. 2 minutes). Add in the rest of the ingredients and stir until well thickened, about 30 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for 10-15 minutes, then transfer to food processor and purée.


Watermelon Salad

Ingredients:

  • 2 lb. Watermelon (Preferably Seedless)
  • 1 Lime
  • 1 tbsp. Brown Sugar
  • 2 tbsp. Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum (or More to Taste)
  • 1 tbsp. Chopped Cilantro Leaves
  • 1 cup Feta, Crumbled

Preparation: Slice watermelon into 1 inch cubes, set aside. Zest lime and squeeze juice (2 tablespoons worth) into bowl. Mix in brown sugar, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and cilantro. Add watermelon and toss to coat. Mix in feta crumbles and put in fridge. Let sit 30 minutes, and serve chilled.


Sailor Jerry Mango Avocado Salsa

Sailor Jerry Mango Avocado Salsa

Mango Avocado Salsa

Ingredients:

  • 2 Ripe Mangos, Peeled, Seeded and Diced
  • 1 Tomato, Seeded and Diced
  • 2 Green Onions, Thinly Sliced
  • 1/2 cup Black Beans
  • 1/4 cup Lime Juice
  • 1 Jalapeño Chili, Minced
  • 1-2 tbsp. Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum (to Taste)
  • 1 Ripe Avocado, Diced

Preparation: Mix together first 7 ingredients and chill for at least 30 minutes (can be made up to 4 hours ahead). Mix in avocado right before serving.


Spiced Rum Chicken

Ingredients:

  • 4 Large Chicken Thighs, Skin On
  • 4 tbsp. Butter
  • 4 Fresh Sage Leaves
  • Pinch of Cinnamon
  • Pinch of Nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup Chicken Broth
  • 1/2 cup Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 1/2 tbsp. Dark Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp. Soy Sauce

Preparation: Wash chicken thighs and pat dry. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and set aside. In a medium bowl, mix together cinnamon, nutmeg, chicken broth, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, dark brown sugar and soy sauce. Put chicken thighs and marinade in a Ziploc bag and refrigerate for at least 3 hours but up to 12. Melt butter in a frying pan (make sure it has a lid) over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the sage leaves and cook for 2 minutes being careful not to let butter burn. Set aside. Prepare the grill, getting it nice and hot. Remove the chicken from the marinade (reserve the marinade) and place it on the frill basting with melted butter. Cook until the thighs are browned. You will need to turn them a few time and continue to baste with butter sauce. Should take 10-15 minutes. Pour the reserved marinade in a sauce pot and simmer until reduced by 1/3, about 7 minutes. Serve with the grilled thighs.


Sweet and Spiced Rum Shrimp

Ingredients:

  • 2 lb. Shrimp (De-veined)
  • 8 tbsp. Fresh Lime Juice (Approx. 5 Limes)
  • 1 1/3 cups Pineapple Juice
  • 1/2 cup Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum (to Taste)
  • 1/2 tbsp. Hot Sauce (Optional)
  • 2 tbsp. Cilantro, Chopped
  • 1-2 Cloves Garlic, Chopped
  • Salt and Pepper, to Taste

Preparation: Combine all but shrimp in a large glass or ceramic dish. Add shrimp, cover and refrigerate. Let marinate for 2-3 hours. Remove the shrimp and discard the marinade. Put some oil in a hot sauté pan and add the shrimp. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until the shells are pink and the meat is opaque. Cook in batches.


Fruit Crisp

Ingredients:

Filling:

  • 2 1/2 lb. Fruit, Fresh or Frozen, Thawed
  • 3 tbsp. Sugar
  • 2 tsp. Flour
  • 1/4 cup Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum

Topping:

  • 3/4 cup Flour
  • 1/3 cup Dark Brown Sugar (Packed)
  • 3 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
  • 6 tbsp. Chilled Butter, Cut into Pieces
  • 1/2 cup Pecans, Chopped

Preparation: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix together the filling ingredients and pour into a greased, medium-size baking dish. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, dark brown sugar, ground cinnamon and salt. With your fingers, rub the butter into the flour mixture until clumps form. Stir in the pecans and sprinkle over the top of the fruit mixture. Bake until crust is golden brown, about 40 minutes. Serve with ice cream.


Sailor Jerry Dog Bites

Sailor Jerry Dog Bites

Dog Bites

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. Hot Dogs, Cut into Bite Sized Pieces, or Small Cocktail Hot Dogs
  • 2 tbsp. Butter
  • 1 tbsp. Onion, Diced
  • 3/4 cup Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 1 cup Ketchup
  • 3/4 cup Brown Sugar

Preparation: Melt butter in a sauce pan and sauté onions in butter until golden. Add the Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, ketchup, and brown sugar and let simmer for 5 minutes. Add the hot dogs and cook for another 10-15 minutes until hot dogs are heated. Serve with toothpicks.


Honey Fruit Salad

Ingredients:

Dressing:

  • 1 cup Fresh Orange Juice
  • 3 tbsp. Crystallized Ginger, Minced
  • 5 tbsp. Honey
  • 3 tbsp. Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum

Salad:

  • 2 cups Strawberries, Sliced
  • 1 Medium Melon, Peeled and Cubed
  • 1 Papaya, Peeled and Cubed

Preparation: Mix together all the dressing ingredients in a saucepan and heat until boiling. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. Mix together all fruit in a large bowl and pour in dressing. Stir to cover evenly.


FOR THE THIRSTY

Jerry and Cola

Ingredients:

  • 1 part Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 2 parts Cola

Preparation: Build in a highball or rocks glass over ice. Garnish with a lime wedge.


Jerry and Ginger Beer

Ingredients:

  • 1 part Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 3 parts Ginger Beer
  • 2 Lime Wedges

Preparation: Fill a glass with ice and squeeze in two wedges of lime. Throw in a measure of Sailor Jerry and top with ginger beer.


Backyard Lemonade

Ingredients:

  • 2 parts Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 4 parts Fresh Lemonade

Preparation: Build in a rocks-filled highball glass. Garnish with a lemon wedge.


Old Ironsides

  • 2 parts Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 4 parts Fresh Pineapple Juice
  • Soda Water

Preparation: Build in a rocks-filled highball or rocks glass. Top with soda water and garnish with a lemon wedge.


Hellfire

Ingredients:

  • 1 part Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 2 dashes Hot Sauce
  • 1/4 of a Fresh Lime
  • Pilsner or Favorite Lager Beer

Preparation: Shake Sailor Jerry with lime and hot sauce, and strain into a beer glass full of ice. Top with beer and squeeze and drop a lime wedge garnish.


Shave and a Haircut

Ingredients:

  • 1 part Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 2 parts Cola
  • 4 parts Stout

Preparation: Add Sailor Jerry and cola to a beer glass. Top with a desired stout.


Heaven Punch

Ingredients:

  • 2 parts Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 1/2 part Lemon Juice
  • 1/3 part Orange Curacao
  • 2 parts Black Tea

Preparation: Build over ice in a tall glass, squeeze and drop in a lemon wedge.


Jerry Float

Ingredients:

  • 2 parts Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 2 parts Root Beer
  • Vanilla Ice Cream

Preparation: Add Sailor Jerry and root beer to a sundae glass (3/4 of the way filled). Spoon a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream on top. Watch the overflow as it fizzes up. Serve with straw and spoons.
