The Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group Puts a Pink Twist on National Wine Week

By Chilled Magazine

The Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group (SWRG) announces its 51st National Wine Week™ Sept. 17-21. During the week, eight iconic restaurant locations will offer a variety of exceptional wines carefully selected to complement the Smith & Wollensky menu. Patrons will be able to sample 10 wines for $10 with the purchase of a lunch entrée. As a twist to the celebrated event, Smith & Wollensky will be “pouring pink” in support of breast cancer awareness.

Each year, nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die because of the disease.¹ To help uncork the cure, SWRG will sell a special Smith & Wollensky Pink Ribbon Pin for $10 beginning during National Wine Week™ through October, with proceeds benefiting the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
“National Wine Week is so highly anticipated that we are excited to use the opportunity this bi-annual event provides to support and raise awareness for breast cancer,” said Kim Giguere-Lapine , vice president of marketing for SWRG. “We’ll be featuring ‘pink’ wine and Champagne options as part of the wine lists. We are also very excited to partner with J. Lohr who will donate $2 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation from every bottle of J. Lohr Carol’s Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc or Cabernet poured at Smith & Wollensky restaurants across the country through October.”
The J. Lohr Touching Lives Program began four years ago in memory of Carol Waldorf Lohr, late wife of founder Jerry Lohr, who passed away unexpectedly due to complications related to breast cancer.
“Our partnership with the National Breast Cancer Foundation enables J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines to contribute in a meaningful way to help raise awareness for the importance of early detection,” said Cynthia Lohr, J. Lohr vice president of marketing. “Through sales of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc from my mother’s namesake vineyard, Carol’s Vineyard, we’ve been able to fund more than 2,500 mammograms. We are thrilled that the premier steakhouse, Smith & Wollensky, is highlighting the need for early detection with initiatives in September and October that involve J. Lohr and that benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation and ultimately, women and their caregivers facing a breast cancer diagnosis.”
Wine partners for the 51st event include:

 • Château D’Esclans Château D’Esclan
 • Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte
 • Gérard Bertrand
 • J. Lohr Carol’s Vineyard

“We are delighted to once again offer guests the chance to win wine and accessories from our amazing partners,” said Giguere-Lapine. “The grand prize winner will receive a weekend trip for two to the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, February 21 to 24, 2013, in Miami provided by Château D’Esclans along with a dinner for two at Smith & Wollensky in South Beach.”
“Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group, for the twenty-fifth consecutive year, has earned the WINE SPECTATOR Award of Excellence with three locations—Chicago, Las Vegas and Houston—receiving the prestigious Best of Award of Excellence,” said Stuart Roy , national director of wine & spirits for SWRG. “We are extremely proud of the exceptional vintage breadth of our wine program and look forward to National Wine Week as an opportunity to showcase our newest wine lists.”
